Pride Month and 2SLGBTQ+ clients

On June 13, 2023, the Law Society of Ontario held a seminar on the topic “our annual Pride Month program, Queer perspectives on professional challenges and mental health. The program featured a panel of distinguished 2SLGBTQ+ practitioners.”

This Sunday, June 25, 2023, Toronto will host the official Pride Parade. This is an opportune time to mention some of the considerations for lawyers when advising 2SLGBTQ+ clients such as:

  • Importance of pronouns and chosen titles and not making assumptions about relationships
  • Gender recognition and its impact on Wills, Powers of Attorney, and relationships
  • Impact of family homophobia and estrangement on estate planning
  • Potential claims for dependency
  • Alternative relationship structures, including non-monogamous relationships

For more timely information on this topic, my friends at Estate Research in England will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. For more information go to: https://estateresearchlearninghub.co.uk/
