Its that time of year again! The bitter cold sets in, out go the pumpkins and in comes Mariah Carey. Another reason to be excited is that November marks Make a Will Month.
While the majority of Canadians believe its important to prepare a will and to appoint a power of attorney to manage their affairs, if they die or become incapable of doing so on their own behalf, more than half of them do not have wills.
Make a Will Month is one month out of the year dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of having a will in place.
The Ontario Bar Association has put together a list of resources along with a community calendar listing public seminars where you can learn about the importance of having a will and powers of attorney for you and your family. There are both virtual seminars along with in-person seminars hosted at local libraries.
Our own Jordin Atin of E-state Planner has created and curated an extensive list of resources for both estate practitioners and clients. Recently, he wrote a helpful blog detailing the top five reasons you should have a lawyer draft your estate plan and will. Check out his blog here.
If you know enough, and want to get right to the planning, the OBA has a helpful search tool that allows you to locate a Wills and Estates lawyer in your community.
Thanks for reading and happy drafting!
